On Thursday we were very fortunate to have two special guest readers for Community Reader Day. Miss Kristin and the Canalligator from the Lowell Spinners paid our class a visit. Needless to say, this was quite exciting!
In Curriculum News:
The students are finishing up their unit on persuasive writing. During this unit the students were asked to write letters to someone asking them to change something. For example, many students wrote letters to Mr. LaCoste asking for longer recess. I also saw many letters to parents asking for pets! The letters will be going home soon so be prepared!
We are also wrapping up our Social Studies unit on maps and globes. The students have learned basic mapping skills such as cardinal directions and using map keys.
In math, we are working on fact families and true/false number sentences. The students are also practicing adding three numbers together. This week the students will be learning about defining and non-defining attributes of shapes. Defining attributes are things like the number of sides and the number of vertices (corners) a shape has. Non-defining attributes include size and color. This can be a little tricky so we will work on this concept multiple times.
Later this month we will be starting a new science unit called "Patterns in the Sky". This unit will focus on the patterns of the sun and moon and on seasonal patterns.
Reminders:
Please continue to dress your child in layers. Many students are finding our classroom quite warm (it really is!) so layers are key!
Also, I've encouraged the students to bring in chapstick and/or hand lotion for dry lips and skin. Students are repeatedly asking to go to the nurse for these things and are frequently missing class time.
This Thursday, March 14th, is an early release day. Dismissal is at 12:20. Please send your child with a snack that day as we will still have snack. We will also have gym in the morning so send your child in sneakers.
Lastly, parent/teacher conferences are coming up at the end of the month and the online sign-up is open.
As always, thank you for your support!
